The Rotary Club of Slave Lake and community seniors bring smiles to the faces of many young children!
The Rotary Club has partnered with local seniors who love to knitting toques and each year deliver over 400 toques to local elementary kids. This is the 5th year of the project - one that brings smiles to many, many faces.
This year we have 16 dedicated and amazing seniors from across the community who love knitting!! They donate their time and often even purchase the yarn and knit toques for the kids. How amazing is that? Our seniors love seeing the pictures of the kids with big smiles on their faces as the kids proudly wear their new toque.
A dedicated core group of seniors at the Vanderwell Heritage Lodge begin knitting in March and by the end of November have hundreds of hats knitted in a wide variety of colours and yarns. Every boy and girl in the 3 elementary schools (CJ Schurter, St. Mary’s and the Kiononia Christian school) in Slave Lake receive toques. This year the boys are loving the blue and orange Oilers toques and the girls seem to favour the pinks and purples with chunky yarn. And thanks to the the very ambitious seniors, the kids at the Smith School have also received warm toques for the past few years.
We would like to send a special thank you to Roberta Kozar, a lively 86 year old who knitted 280 toques this year. Roberta joined Rotarian Gailene Kazakoff this year in delivering toques to the young children at CJ Schurter school and received many hugs and smiles from all the kids. Gailene is in back row in the picture above on the left and Roberta is on the far right.
